Email Question, Surely its possible, but how?

Right... I have 4 machines, each machine I have setup all 15 of my email accounts [POP3]... but i've only just realised how stupid this actually may be.

Is it possible, to do something similar to exchange, where i just see the emails once, rather than leaving them on the server and downloading all the emails direct from the server, can i have my clients Sync, instead of download new? much in the way of Exchange email & OWA?

    Would be a lot handier.

Also, do all hosts support IMAP4 and could IMAP4 be what im after i wonder. (i have no clue what it is)

a quick Wiki and it seems IMAP4 &/OR GMS(??) is just what im after.

manipulating the email on the server it would seem.

yep, but if your mail server doesnt support it youre sol. another solution would be to setup one machine with a mail server, and let the rest get it from there.

    yeah you want IMAP4

Not all hosts support IMAP4, but most do. Have you thought of setting up your own mail server? I'm sure you could get an open source mail server that can retrieve on IMAP or POP and then let you connect from the other machines. This would speed up access if they are on a local network.

i would run my own mailserver if i wasnt a tight arse and didnt have to pay the leccy bill.

its web hosting renewal time and im on the hunt. so open to suggestions to a cheap host which supports imap4...

(need 500mb+ storage on the webstore side mind)

most webhosts should offer IMAP as an alternative to POP3 - i've been using IMAP for donkey's years, and use it as a basic criteria for selecting a webhost

Then their account details page is wrong. Logged into my main email account with IMAP to get my sent mail from their server just now.

im with web-mania at the minute and really wanted to move away from cheap hosts. have been pondering the tiny package @ aso and hosting my pics on my godaddy space.

    decisions.

though if D-H do support IMAP thats another option, but its a cheap host and looks very similar to web-mania

i've only really used cheap hosts because i only really use them for email. I do have web space with blog and gallery installed and setup, i just don't use them often

right, gone with Dream-Hosting... now receiving email, which is a step up from Web-Mania...

However, i've ended up with 3 folders (one for each account) and each has its own inbox.

Is it possible to sort them all into one inbox, just like a normal personal folder?

You could also try Slashmail for Imap4:
    http://slashmail.org

Do you get cpanel with dreamhost?

If so all you need to do is set up a mail redirect ie, got to Mail, then Forwarders, and set it up so me@foo.com goes to myemail@foo.com, or whatever

Also, I'm just wondering, which email programme are you using? I find Thunderbird to be very good for Imap, though I would much rather use Pocomail (but it's Imap implimentation is not very good)

PS: Someone mentioned A SMALL Orange. I use them, but my server (HURLEY) has had all kinds of problems recently, and general timeouts on site visits and ftp.
