    WinXP startup issue...

my pc seems to be doing something strange on startup...

WinXPpro starts seemingly as normal, goes through the usual screens, but when it gets to
showing the desktop it just sort of stops - no icons, no windows start bar, just my background
    picture.

ctrl-alt-del brings up the task manager and using that I can restart the pc and then it's fine.
The problem appears to lie with explorer.exe because sometimes that process has to be
ended on this reboot. sometimes by ending the explorer.exe process I can get the pc going if
    the explorer.exe restarts properly.

    any ideas?

All I can suggest is that you scan the pc for viruses with a different virus checker than you normally use in case it's been compromised.
    Online scanner: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    Or download ClamWin: http://www.clamwin.com/
    Both free.
Then try a free trojan scanner like Ewido: http://www.ewido.net/en/

Then scan the pc for spyware. Get yourself a copy of spybot or ad-aware.

After you've done all that (and it will take some time) you're left with windows update to make sure everything's up to date.

Once you've done all that the only thing left would be something you've installed which has got it's hooks on explorer.exe and is causing it to crash.

I use AVG free ed, ewido, spybot S&D, adaware-se, all coming up clean bar the usual assortment of cookies. Will try the online trendmicro one, but I think this is more a driver/software issue/incompatability than a malicious program, something stopping explorer.exe on a cold boot ... actually I might have to see just how reproducable it is... Thanks for the suggestion.

run msconfig, and see if theres anything starting up that shouldnt be. i know a number of people have had similar issues with usb devices p;ugged in, so it could be worth paring back the hardware to the bare minimum before you start your trouble shooting.

Try running explorer.exe when you startup (ctrl-alt-del>file>new task), or put it in your startup list.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

Run bootvis in both optimise and track and trace modes - it will give you more idea about where the delays are.

if you get really stuck you can always use the repair windows on the xp disk keeps all software but gets rid of service packs, drivers etc (i think) and re installs them.
