    Ubuntu migration

After a whole day with Suse 10.1 I've decided to migrate to Ubuntu

Partially due to the reported package update problems with 10.1, partially because I'm seeing a few funnies, particularly around display configuration and reboot.

I'm currently downloading the ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso live image to run from CD. Is this the correct image to use for a core2duo system (is 64 bit CPU support included with this?). I get the impression I can kick the full install from this image if I like it?

If you want to use the 32-bit version of Ubuntu, that's correct (I assume it'll work on Core 2). If you want the 64-bit version, then you'll need a different version. Incidentally, from personal experience at least, I've found that the alternate CD i.e. text based installation is better than the desktop CD i.e. GUI based installation.

Hmm. I can only see one i386 version. Does anyone have a link to the 64-bit version?

    So no 64-bit Intel support?

What CPU is it ? - might fall under "EM64T"

Core2Duo. Surely AMD64 is AMD only?

no, AMD64 is for 64-bit extensions to i386. i386 is named after intel (since it was their idea first), AMD64 is named after AMD (because it was their idea first)

To be fair, there is quite a few differences between AMD64 and EM64T - but most things are compiled in such a way that they will work on both.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EM64T for more.

Cheers guys. I have the i386 installation up and running but will switch to AMD64. Have to say changing the display resolution was a bit of a mission!

Have now installed the AMD64 version. Things seem generally OK but both the live CD and HDD installation fail to shutdown properly, I'm left with a black screen (sometimes with horizontal white lines) and a short clip of the shutdown music looping continuously.

Actually, interesting this as Suse 10.1 (64-bit) struggled with shutdown as well. Could this be a generic 64-bit linux problem or is that unlikely?

Sounds like you have a problem with ACPI or APM. At the end of the shutdown process the kernel makes a hardware call to turn off the power. It looks like that is not happening.

does that PC shutdown OK from windows, or from a knoppix disc or similar live linux CD?

    It shuts down fine from
    • Ubuntu 6.06.1 i386 (32 bit) live
    • Ubuntu 6.06.1 i386 (32 bit) installed

    It doesn't shutdown properly from
    • Suse 10.1 (64-bit) installed
    • Ubuntu 6.06.1 AMD64 live
    • Ubuntu 6.06.1 AMD64 installed

I'm happy to go back to the Ubuntu i386 but wonder what performance hit this will incur? I'm building this machine specifically as a number-cruncher for my own data analysis software. How much speed gain will this see from being built by 64-bit gcc?

gcc? not an enormous amount. the main reason for using a 64-bit distro is to access >2GiB RAM properly

Ah, my misunderstanding. So the 64 bit refers only to address bus width, not data bus?
