Subs for a .avi (divx) movie

Got a .avi movie and downloaded the subs for it.
My problem is I'd like to watch it on my Media Centre PC via WinMCE frontend and have the subs on - how on earth do you do it ? Is there a button on the MCE remote I need to press ?

Infact just testing it on Media Player showing the subs would be a good start for me !

    Any help appreciated.

i have no idea if MediaPlayer or MCE can handle external subs on an AVI. I'm guessing probably not, as there there is a lot of stuff they don't handle that others do.

your only option would be to combine the subs and video and "burn" them into the video (so they are part of the video instead of overlayed on top). You can probably get some info on this over at http://www.doom9.org/

Yeah, I'd imagine you just need to install a sub filter, and maybe a software player capable of auto loading them. make sure the sub file and the .avi have the same name (apart from the extension of course), and install ffdshow as above, or vobsub, and play via Media Player Classic.

Alternatively, tho not sure if this will work, combine the .avi and the sub file into an MKV container and see if both play.
