    Vista RC1 CPP now available

It's now been thrown open to the public - download from http://download.windowsvista.com/pre...n/download.htm

EDIT - getting the same problem as before on the downloads - direct dl pulls down a tiny (ie a few k) file, download manager reports network error. Suspect this is due to the config of the network here at work, will grab it later when I get home.

No problem here - although you need to use IE to get the download manager to work.

    3 hours to go..

Yep I used IE and am getting the network error from the download manager. As I say I'm fairly certain that it's due to the way the DL manager works and our network config at work, but it's no biggy and I'll grab it when I get home .

Also if upgrading from a previous beta it's advised that you install all critical updates before starting the upgrade

I'm going to format and clean install - it's a better place to start from for evaluation and upgrades can take hours in some cases..

Yeah, same - luckily I can just disable the proxy in IE temporarily, and all's well.

You won't. Not until the CPP is opened up again - previous CPP subscribers are fine though.

You can install it without a key apparently, and use it for up to 14 days until you need to activate. Can't verify that myself though.

I think you may be right there...the pre-RC1 build that I was testing had some spiel about that.

Cheers for the link Splash, will give this a go when I get home this evening

Got it on now - took about 20 mins to install (!) and about 5 more to do the speed metric. Feels very quick and no big clangers yet - now installing Visual Studio 2005 to start working out why our software doesn't load correctly (probably my fault).

I could scream right now. I've tried to download it about 6 times and each time it fails:

1). I try to download it all at once so its a normal download, but it gets to 2Gig and fails!!!!!

2). I've used the download manager crap with IE and FF and it will only download a 907KB file.

Whats up? Is it me? I'm itching to try RC1 out. If i could get away with abusive language i would use it right now, I'm so infuriated at the moment.

It works well, but to be honest it's not convincing me to upgrade. Yeah sure it looks nice, but Flip3D for example doesn't actually help me, it's just Alt+Tab layed out slightly differently - fancy effects for fancy effects sake. Compare this with Exposé which gives you single-click access to every window you currently have open without having to cycle through them, and which was released three years ago.

I've been using Vista on and off since Beta 2 was released, and I still Alt+Tab rather than Flip3D, because it's just as fast. I've been using OSX for about a year or so and always use Exposé because it's a lot faster than Alt+Tab - there's an actual benefit to it rather than "ooh shiny".

I also hate the new Control Panel for being the least intuitive thing I've ever seen. There's far too many options and some of the categories have duplicate entries in them. A total mess.
