New Server, Old Docs & Permissions! Argh!

We've installed a new server in our European office, and retained all the old documents... natuarally.

However, with the clients now connected, they are unable to open the documents in anything but Read Only... All folders are also read only.

Is there any easy way to 'in effect' CHMOD them to 777

Windows/Linux? If Windows (probably) and you really want to allow everyone access you should be able to just add the Everyone group at the root of the share and cascade the permissions.

    Its windows 2003...

As no-one has the right/working permissions at the minute we would like to in effect 777 it, then distribute the correct permissions.

Fist of all make sure your users have access to the share the documents are stored in (right click on the shared folder, go to the sharing tab and click permissions) they will need at least change permissions.

Next check the permissions on the documents themselves:
Right click > properties > Security tab

If you need to reset the permissions on all the files then on the top level folder Right click > properties > Security tab> change the relevent permissions> click on advanced >tick the "Replace permission entries on all child object......"

I have no idea what 777 is though!

you got local admin on the box? if so login, take ownership of the share, implement the correct permissions and you should be fine.
