Norton subscription ended, which AV now?

    hello,

My subscription to the awful Norton 360 has finally expired (I noticed by the way they have the cheek to disable the entire program, not just internet protection). Can anyone reccomend an AV program that's just as good, but not as heavy on resources?

    Thanks!

avast! (free) or kaperspy (not free).

or for an AV thats just as good... why not try no protection?

As above, but add NOD 32 (very low overhead)

It can be a little painful on initial setup, but once it's running it's the best I've used.

    hello,

How is Kaspersky in terms of resource usage? Esp. in relation to Norton?

    Thanks again!

Re: Norton subscription ended, which AV now?

I don't (and won't!) use Norton internet security stuff on my rig so I don't have any real data to compare, but I certainly have no issues with it interfering (once setup)

    I also would recomend Kaspersky.

Very low on resources compared with Norton.

Re: Norton subscription ended, which AV now?

Again another Kasperksy recommendation, been using it for about a year and a half after previously using Norton for a few years.

Just recently picked up a 3-user license off a seller on ebay for ~£17.50 inc postage. Although don't do what a couple of my mates did and accidentally buy the Anti-Virus only version (the packaging pretty much identical), unless of course you are only after AV

KIS8 is out soon too I think. When they upgraded from KIS6 to KIS7 it was a free upgrade for KIS6 owners, so I am expecting it to be the same for KIS7->8

    Shoulda gone to Scan fella

3 x User Licence for Kaspersky Internet Security was about £14 iirc.
kaspersky if you have version 7, gives you a free upgrade to Kaspersky 2009 aswell.
I updated mine the other day and the overheads are even lower on 2009.

    VERY pleased with it.

Re: Norton subscription ended, which AV now?

An infinate looping program that performs random calculations on random numbers is more resource friendly than Norton. How that thing sells at all is beyond me. ++ for Kasperksy for personal use. ClamWin is another good one if you don't need on-access scanning, it has a brilliant detection rate.

Ah cool, I mustve checked their site only days before it went live a week or so back.

And KIS6/7 owners do get a free upgrade http://www.kaspersky.com/upgrade

Judging from some of the topics in Kaspersky forums, I might hold off a bit from installing it yet though, or just try it on the laptop first.

I looked at scan, and it was £17.xx inc vat at the time and I would still have had to pay for postage on top. Remembering that the free delivery is based on ex vat rates too, it was a much better choice for me to get it £17 delivered from a reputable seller on ebay
