    Angry iTunes 7 - A Big Mistake

I dont know who else has tried iTunes 7, dont its a mistake, a huge one at that!.

I know 5 ppls machines + 2 of mine that have crumbled with it on. Its buggy as anything, some nice new features but they cause it to go majorly wrong.

    For Instance:

    1) Left it playing minimized with JukeBox thing on, it grew in 2hrs to over 300Mb OUCH
    2) Turn Visualizer on and it stuters at 2FPS and destroys your CPU
3)Turn off Direct X mode on visualizer and it goes up to about 20FPS
    4) Music stuters due to memory leaking when your using other apps or even iTunes itself

Im not one for winging but how in the world did such a buggy version get realeased mainstream not even beta!

From what i observed its the JukeBox and Album art thats causing the memory issues, its caching each piece of artwork in ram as a track is played, and not clearing old ones which means no more RAM for you sunny jim.

I've also heard the new firmware messes up peoples iPods, what is going on!

I wonder how long it will be until a "patch" or "bug fix" is released!

If you have had similar or other issues with this release let the rest of us know here!

I've found that editing tags can lead to the file becoming unplayable in iTunes 7. The only way to fix that is to clear the tags with another program and then re-enter them.

iTunes 7 just managed to hard-crash Windows on me - that's a pretty serious problem.

I think I'll stick with my policy of not updating iTunes. I never feel safe updating software like that (for the reason like what's happening) and there is nothing wrong with iTunes 5.

I have the music stuttering problem, even when I do things like load a page in Firefox.

It misses out album covers when I tell it to check my entire library, yet nearly every time now it will find a cover if I manually right click on an album that has a cover missing.

Another thing is that it no longer saves the progress of playing a podcast on my Shuffle, which is irritating having to fast forward every time.

Given the woes of iTunes 7, I've reduced my use of it completly. The only thing I use it for now is getting the latest podcast episodes and syncing them with my iPod. Use third party software for everything else.

It's a good media player for the mac but it has messed up all my music by making it about 30% more quiet which is really annoying when I play it using my phone.

Is there some kind of software that can increase the volume of the file.

It sounds like it's transcoded your files. Transcoding is death to sound quality. I cant think of an app to increase the volume, but it would most likel mean another transcode, which will sound awful.

Does iTunes use some form of Replaygain metadata like other media players do?

Use a good tag editor to see if there is a replaygain tag.

You should not need to transcode to sort this out.

(replay gain is used to set all of you music files to the same volume, especially good when you use playlists made from tracks from different albums).

On the other hand, it could be that your music has been 'Normalized' to a level thats too low, which is more of a problem. But i believe there is a way to get the volume back without trancoding, i might be wrong, but have a look on hydrogenaudio.org.

Where is Funkstar, he could probably tell you.

I've got some issues with iTunes 7.0 too.

I get the "stuttering" issue whenever Thunderbird grabs mail or someone MSNs me. Most of the time it only lasts a second (old iTunes did that with TBird) but sometimes I have to pause the track for a few seconds and then continue.

It crashes (i.e. Windows closes it) quite often when I attempt to close with the X button or "File" > "Exit".

It seems to only use the 2 front speakers of my 5.1 system. There is very little (altho some) audible output from the center, the sub and the rear satellites but it's not just doing whatever my souncard settings are set to, like everything else does (and iTunes 6.0.4 did).

I'm not saying it doesn't seriously crash some peoples machines just that for me it's not quite as drastic as some. That said, I'd still rather it behaved itself as well as 6.0.4 did on my machine. I'm glad they've stopped it failing installs because I run a 64-bit OS tho.

Apple fixed all the bugs I've seen in previous versions so far, I imagine this will be sorted soon enough. I'll keep using it for now as the benefits are worth a little extra hassle to me. It plays all my house mix CDs without the 1 second gap between tracks, if you're into dance music this is an absolute god-send. Almost all software is released in need of patching (anyone heard of Microsoft? ), is it really fair to be so hard on Apple because of this?

Sorry for spamming the thread, but I had a thought and decided it maybe warranted a little more than tagging on to the end of my last one with an Edit:

I've got a suspicion iTunes 7.0 is not using DirectSound. Given that it now stutters a lot, doesn't seem to adhere to the Windows sound controls and the general new level of instability, is it possible it's been written to use something like OpenAL or some custom audio API? I'm no expert, hence I'm throwing this open to the floor but my semi-educated logic makes me wonder if this is whats going on...

just quoting what someone said on another forum (I dont actually use itunes, thank god)

    here is one potential solution:

Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panels -> Quicktime
    Click on Audio tab.
Set Size popup to 16 bits.
    Click OK.
seems to have worked for a few people

That fix gets rid of sound distortion and did so for me. Apart seeing as i jsut use mobo AC97 sound it wasnt a big issue, and luckily i havent (touch wood) had any other problems. And i really like it. Much better organised without being drastically different, and i like the jukebox thing - though they should let you be able to go full screen with it - that would be good.

Had a look for that, mine was already set to 16 bit. Looks like I'm waiting for Apple then...
