    Linux Books

    Hi

Anyone have preferences for books on Linux. I use Ubuntu and know of the new Ubuntu book but has anyone experience of it?

    Thanks

Why exactly do you want a Linux book? Don't forget, if you want help on anything, you can always ask here, or take a look at the Ubuntu wiki. If you want to learn more about its inner workings, I'd suggest a look at Debian (if you want to stick with a Debian sort of distro), or other distributions, such as Gentoo, Slackware or even Linux From Scratch.

NB: I have had NO experience with any of the distributions I've mentioned except for Ubuntu and Debian. I just know that there's not (as) much hand holding in Gentoo, Slackware and Linux From Scratch.

Thanks for the info but always good to have a reference manual especially on an OS which is often command line oriented.

pretty much all of ubuntu is gui driven, and the wiki shows more distro specific information than any book I've heard of.

If you want a generic Linux book that gives you the CLI commands, then O'Reily's "Linux in a Nutshell" iby Schroeders is apretty good standard text. If the budget doesn't run to that, then O'Reily's "Linux Pocket Guide" by daniel Barratt is also pretty good (and is usually open on my desk when I am doing system admin stuff)

Thanks for the pointers. I think the '...pocket guide' book maybe a bit too basic but worth looking at for quick reference I am sure.

    Again, thanks!

first (& only) ones i've ever had were 'in a nutshell', 'For Dummies' & 'I dint know you could do that'. All purchased yeeeers ago & tbh, hardly used. Get on mailing lists, contact your local LUG & good forums such as Hexus are all you need.

Do not be afraid to ask! No matter how daft you think the question is.
