so I would guess the Intel DP965LT would work
its gonna be used via remote login, but need graphic card just for the setup, do you recommend any cheapo card that work with linux
i use SUSE for worl myself.
the C2D chipsets are very new so there are various kernel incompatibilities which have been addressed in the new 2.6.18 kernel.
the new kernel will be used in SUSE 10.2 due in December.
you can always install your own custom kernel. The 2.6.18 kernel have new jmicron and ich8 drivers but they are still a little flaky. There is a lot of goodies on andrew morton's mm patchset, hopefully things will stablize in the next 2 kernel release.
ps: I use the gigabyte-ds3
I've not managed to get a single linux livecd to work with my gigabyte-ds4, it's down to jmicron and ich8 drivers used on half of p965 based motheboards
Being a newbie to linux I've not got the knowledge to patching new kernel, so I'm sitting it out hoping it'll be sorted out very soon.
I've seen the xgl demos on youtube and I can't wait
Maybe we need a sticky thread for people to post when they've got linux working with a straight install or livecd use with details of there core2duo setup including motherboard used
I use gentoo and I've got it booting with this livecd http://www.kernel-of-truth.net/downloads_kOT.html
jmicron and ich8 drivers are already in the andrew mortons's 2.6.18. Currently I'm using a custom patched kernel with mm patchset and ck patchset. It works wonderfully. jmicron and ich8 should be in mainline in the next release and hopefully more stable.
If I'm not mistaken, fedora FC5 livecd works out of the box using generic ide. FC5 also have aixglx enabledlovely for those eye candy you have been waiting for.
My home-built is a i945G based motherboard. I initially ran Suse 10.1 (32-bit) fine, but switched to Ubuntu due to the broken package update mechanism in 10.1. The motherboard is an Asus P5LD2-VM SE, with on-board integrated everything.
I've tried this livecd and while it reconised my ide dvd rewriter, it just went to the linux prompt - the messages flashed up so quickly I was unable to see if/what the problem was.I use gentoo and I've got it booting with this livecd http://www.kernel-of-truth.net/downloads_kOT.html
But tonight I downloaded the newly released Fedora Core 6 (Zod) Live-Spin ISO (i386 and x86_64 combined) from http://fedoraunity.org and it works a treat![]()
Just download it, burn it to cd, reboot, press enter when asked to, then half way through it will look like it's hanged but on mine I had lots of broadband activity so assume it was getting something of the net - then it quickly went into the OS, reconised the sound driver needed and now I'm typing this message on firefox.
My spec
E6600
Gigabyte P965-DS4
2Gb memory
250Gb SATAII Hard disk set to default in bios
IDE Lite-on DVD Rewriter
