    A decent CMS?

I'm looking for a decent CMS for a website idea I've been thinking about.

It needs to be able for me to make "posts", giving news, and also an article section where people can search alphabetically for the name of things.

It also needs a download section.

If it's open source so I can customize the actual code without getting into trouble would be great too.

    Thanks!

To be honest I wouldn't bother looking. I spent a good two months earlier this year looking for a CMS that would do what I wanted it to do, but I couldn't find one. Its pretty much impossible to find one that will do exactly what you want it do to. For me there was always something about the CMS I was trying that I just didn't like. Add to that the fact that most have really shoddy and confusing scripting makes customizing a nightmare. I don't know what the situation is with them now but at the time pretty much all of them were using tables for layout, thats something I just couldn't live with.

If you know a server side language to a reasonable degree and can use it with a database and have the time then your best bet is to make one your self. I got fed up of searching for one so I made my own (well I'm still making it) and I'm glad I did now. I takes time but the end result is something that should do exactly what you want it to do. A CMS like the one you require shouldn't take that long to make.

Here is where I started on my quest to find a CMS anyway if you don't want to make your own.

Joomla is the best by far, does everything you need and more.

(old post but I'll reply anyway)

I spent a long time trying to find a decent CMS that was easy to use and flexible. In the end I gave up and hacked a blogging package called Wordpress instead.

It's incredibly flexible and easy to use. Its plug-in system is great too. Best of all, you can easy add the elements to an existing web design so that it hardly looks like a CMS at all.

If you already run a blog with Wordpress then it makes for a great, simple CMS solution too.
