Question Inserted cards don't update in USB card reader

I have one of those USB card readers that plugs directly onto one of the USB2 port headers on my motherboard.

When I plug it in, it works fine: I insert a card in the reader and it picks it up (the "What do you want to do" menu).

However, after a while, it doesn't. If I go to my drive listing, the multiple removable drives are listed (one for each card type), but when I double click, it just opens a blank window, as if there are no files on the card.

The only way to fix is to unplug the USB header (drives go away) then plug it back it. A Refresh or F5 doesn't work.

Any ideas? It's a bit of a pain to have to reboot / open the case each time I want to do something

Edit: I'm using XP Pro SP2

sounds like a flakey card reader. Might be faulty, or just not very good.

Hmm. I suppose it could be. Bought it off scan a little while ago.

could be as its a usb mass storage device, if your not stopping the device before ejecting the media its handing the device.

I have this problem as well, its one of those floppy drives that Scan sell with the card reader built in. I have never found a solution. It normally works for a few inserts & removes before it can’t see an inserted card anymore. The reader will sort its self out only after a reboot, which isn't ideal.

My one isn't the one with the 3.5 floppy integrated, it's a standalone reader that fits in a 3.5inch slot.

Whether I eject the card or not has no impact (I didn't think you needed to in XP unlike 2k which complains if you remove before stopping). Whilst it's "working", I can insert and remove various cards as many times as a like. After a while (a day or two) it stops recognising the fact that a card has been put in.

Each slot has a little green LED next to it that lights up when a card is inserted. This still lights up even after I can no longer read the card in Windows.

that sort of backs up my theory of your not stopping the device before removing it so windows is confused about the status.
