    64bit compatible defrag app

Does anyone know of a good defrag app that will work with XP64? Previously I used O&O Defrag, which I liked very much.

I tried the O&O server edition 8.5 which apparently has 64bit support but doesn't work with XP64.

If anyone knows of a good one, especially with the sort of options found in O&O that would be appreciated.

    Cheers.

I've used O&O with x64 with no hassles - maybe you need a newer version?

    good question.

defragging isn't a black art, it's just a symptom of how windows stores data. i don't get peoples' aversion to the windows tool

It doesn’t defragment the page-file IIRC, where most 3rd party tools do.
I also find diskeeper considerably faster than the windows one, and it gives me more information on what exactly its doing.
Easy enough to stop the page file and recreate it, but your average windows user wouldn’t be able to do it.

I tried 8.5 which is the latest version for both server and normal and both come up as not 64bit compatible.

Because programs like o&o give you a ton more options on how you want your data sorted. Its not an aversion, I just want the best tool for the job and Windows defrag does not fall into that catergory.

I'll check my verson number when I get home (if I remember) and let you know the one I used. Don't have X64 on the PC just now.

8.5 seems to be the latest version all round. No worries. Perfect disc works, although I much prefered the o&o intergrated interface with the management console.

I've seen the windows defrag tool kill NTFS filesystems, both on XP and on Windows 2000 Server. An "admin" (and I use the term loosely, based on her level of expertise) at my previous employer ended up having to restore a file server data partition from the previous night's backup after something went wrong while she was defragging the partition in question. God knows how she kept her job after destroying what basically amounted to a day's work for the entire company.

There is, however, a school of thought that claims that defragging a filesystem which lives on a striped RAID array (RAID0 or RAID5 for the most part) is a bad idea and while I've yet to test the theory I think there's some truth in this. I guess it depends on the stripe size of the array and the average size of the files that live on it. This will obviously not apply if you're just using a single disk or a non-striped array though.

Personally I find the best defrag tool is... Ghost. When taking an image of a partition to a file it does it file-by-file which puts each file back into one chunk. When you zap the image back over the original filesystem it puts them back in one piece each, even the page file. Try it (or use another imaging tool if you prefer), then analyze the fragmentation of the filesystem with the Windows tool. Every file is made up of one fragment only, even the swap file and MBR. Plus you've got a handy snapshot of your filesystem you can use if something else nadges it

There was beta of diskkeeper out for x64. I cant seem to find it now though, but i am drunk

Personally i use diskkeeper pro, becaise it can defrag the drive in about a quarter of the time of the windows tool, along with MFT, boottime defrag, pagefile options, include/exclude lists, something called I-FAAST(supposed to speed up regularly accessed files, never tested it myself, but i leave it on anyway), decent scheduling options and pausing itself if it detects other apps accessing the disk.

So yeah a bit better than the windows one.
