    64 bit ?

When putting togther a new system based on E6600 core2duo is it better to go for the trusted 32bit XP or the 64bit?

i noticed on scan the price difference is nominal, i know that there are meant to be some compatibility issues with the 64 but im guessing that its faster.

OR is it worth just getting 32 XP reliability and waiting for Vista to get up and running properly?!!
i guess what i really need to know is anyones own experience with 64bitXP pro
thanks in advance for any replies!!

64bit windows isnt "faster" as such. Only apps that need 64-bit registers will gain from 64-bit. normal 32-bit apps will not become any faster (infact some will panic when they see a 64-bit OS)

Yup. 64-bit XP has too many issues compared to the normal 32-bit version IMO. I certainly wouldnt spend money on it with Vista so close.

Stick with 32bit, I was running 64bit for a while (free copies of windows cos im doing comp science at uni) but there were just too many driver problems that it wasnt worth any potential benifit... so yeh 32bit and then when Vista comes out, wait a year and get that

x64 itself is faster (or rather 'smoother' much the way x86 was when Hyperthreading CPUs first came along). All in all I got everything working I wanted, but I agree with the above, there's just far too much pain for very little gain.

Unless you really like not having drivers for your hardware, stick with 32bit.

None of the devices I use lack x64 drivers.

Couple of bits of software that use device drivers to work don't run on x64 but they're home and not corporate versions of the software; x64 is a workstation OS after all.
