    Remote desktop software

I don't think Windows Remote Desktop will do this, but i'll ask anyway.

Is it possible to get the remote session to use a vitual desktop instead of what is on the actual main monitor? It's for logging into my HTPC which has MediaPortal full screen on the primary monitor. I don't want to disturb that or have anything showing on my plasma while messing around in the background.

Will VNC or any of the other OSS remote desktop apps do this?

VNC actually exports the main display - what you're looking for is something like Terminal Services, which will create a virtual machine when a remote user connects. I wonder if the free version of VMWare might provide what you need?

There's a little hack you can do that allows you to have multiple terminal sessions in XP SP2. With this you should be able to login to a new session remotely and leave the main desktop intact.

You should be able to login using the windows remote viewer thingy, just login to a second account on the PC rather than the main account.

interesting, didn't know about that. Thanks guys.

I've used the XP Remote Desktop before and really liked it. I'll take a look at this when i get home.

Only down side is with a second user on XP it won't auto-login to the main MediaPortal user, but i guess TweakUI will sort that out.
