    Desktop database software

    Hi,

I need to do some database work with some simple information, names addresses and invoices etc

Obviously im just looking for a desktop solution not server based!

Is microsoft access any good as i have the xp version of that with office so its the obvious choice, or is there some open source software i should be supporting?

I dont really want to spend money haha!

Also it would be great if i could link it somehow to an invoive template so that the products can just be entered out, it totaled and that can be saved and printed out.

    Thanks

Access is great at what it does. I know there are several open source databasing servers, but i don't know of any desptop apps, but there probably is (does OpenOffice have one?). I've built a rather large DB using access at work, it's split into a frontend (forms, queries, reports, code, etc) and a backend (just the data). Both are sitting at around 15MB each.

considering nvening stuggled with opensource technology in the past and seems to lean more towards microsoft, Access is the only real option.

    lol @ nick

I struggled with linux because I did not realise it needed so much new learning. I did not have time to learn, so I didnt bother. When I am prepared to learn all about Linux I will.

Unfortunatelly some of us have work to do as well as friends to go out with.

I appreciate many of you work with linux anyway and therefore this is not a problem.

I wasn't calling you for not understanding it, I was just saying you struggled with the open source technologies, so that pretty much locks you to an MS platform which really only offers you access.

You could try using Excel if you have that. It's simpler to set up and use than Access and is more than capable of storing and sorting the data you need.

You could also look into FileMaker, but that means spending money. See how far you get with Access first.

yeah, but at school you had notes and it told you exactly what to do

What exactly you trying to do? I've got loads of code and forms i could probably mess about with for you.

I want forms for each customer/ order (depending on what i search for i suppose?) which can then be used for a printed invoice too.

Therefore i need a customer info table

And an order table which has the possibility for multiple items (with an item description not an item number).

Also for the forms to calculate totals and the what not.

Also is there some way of intergreting profits/ item costs with this?

    yeah, no problem.

I'm offshore right now without my laptop, so i can't do anything withi ti until i get home. Our current system i built at work deals with Customer/Suppliers, Delivery Notes, Purchase Orders, Stock Management, Job Files, and staff details. It doesn't do any Invoicing, but that isn't a problem to add, we use Sage for all that anyway.

Wow, yer if you can send me a black version of that it would be a great help thanks! Would save me a nice bit of time.

Is sage good for accounts as my parents are thinking of replacing human hired people with themselves and sage?

    No idea

It seems to be pretty much standard though. There are several different versions, i believe Line 50 is the small business version. I think one of the advantages to suing Sage is that just about every accountant will take the native SSage data files into their system to prepair the end of year accounts etc.

We are looking to change our system, but i've not had much dealings with that. Been looking at a Microsoft Dynamics suite including the accounting, stock and CRM. But you are talking a good few grand for all that.
