no sound from games/music on XP :(

Hi i am havinga problem in terms of sound on my xp pro PC. There is literely no sound coming out of my speakers when i play games and music on my pc. When i try to play music on musicmatch, it gives me the error saying wavOut not supported??

Secondly when i try windows media player it says that there must be somthing wrong with my sound card. I have a built in sound card called realtek AC97 Audio on a old ABIT IC7-MAX3 Mobo.

Also i have a windows skin and that skin does not appear properly anymore. Its a silver x360 skin that now appears with no picture icons.

I tried to reboot it but things got worse, i then got an error from windows explorer! I then Loaded a profile which doesnt have a skin and all seems find except for the sound!!

When i was logged into my profile with a xp skin, i clicked on the volume control and an error message saying that i need to go to control panel and add new hardware. i tried this and it diddnt detect any new hardware, i also looked at the sound card hardware and all seems to be working fine. However when i clicked on the volume control in the none skin profile, it worked but still diddnt have sound.

I only get sound when the XP boots up/shuts down or when i connect a usb device..

BTW, I Recently installed a new graphics card known has the 7800gs+ gainward bliss agp. since i installed that, when i play pro evo 5, the sounds somtimes gets cut off during the game. However its only this game that has the problem..

    Any suggestions? thanks

Try uninstalling sound and graphics drivers....run a driver cleaner...then reinstall drivers....see if that helps.

Update: I downloaded a driver cleaner from http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.php

This program gave me options to remove a list of drivers. i removed the nvidia and the realtek driver. after i did this i than uninstalled the drivers from the gpu and sound.

i then re installed it and i was working for about 10mins and the sound stopped working!

I then Tried to install the latest driver for my gpu and still no luck so i started the whole process again.

Now i have a new problem, my pc reboots itself everytime im in the middle of re installing the gpu driver!

also, whilst trying to re install the gpu driver it keeps teling me if i want to replace some files from the latest nvidia driver, to the old orginal files from the driver located in the original driver cd..

how can this be? wasnt the new driver uninstalled? seems like it wasnt. i clicked on the reinstall driver under control panel-systems-device settings- display adaptor.

btw i tried system restore and it says it cannot restore it to a previous date. i tried running it again but now i get a message similar to this :"system restore is not unable to protect your pc, please reboot and open system restore again

    any suggestions?

Right i found a temp solution to the problem. i went into component services under admin tools and had to start the windows audio service!

The windows audio service is set to auto so i dont see a reason why it doesnt start automaticly.

To summarize my problem: When i go to sound properties, all the boxes are grey and has a message at the top saying no sound device. When i go to the sound device properties, it says the drivers are all working perfectly..

    hope this little update helps
