    Linux Resources thread

In response to a few posts of late that have asked reasonably straight forward questions that where already posted on the various support groups related to the distros

I've put this thread together to offer some base Linux resources that could be used as a first port of call.

The Linux Documentation Project - this is a site of basic linux documentation and is an excellent for beginners on how to use generic functions such as bash, which is generic across all distributions.

    http://www.tldp.org

Ubuntu site, forums and wiki's These are related to ubuntu specific problems only, the wiki is an excellent source of informaiton and how to, while the forums range from basic specific questions through to advanced system setup. If between the wiki and the forum you can't find your answer - and no one responds to your post on the forum - then I suggest you mail Linus himself (joke) as they are a very full and rich resource

Fedora's resources are much the same as ubuntu with a main site for general information, a strong wiki and very active set of forums. As with ubuntu you are very likley to get the answer from one of these resources plus a little bit of extra information you didn't know you needed.

    http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/
    http://www.fedoraforum.org/

Open Suse's informaiton and support can be found at
These include product information, strong documentation, a good generic FAQ, as well as a support database which is similar to a wiki and an active forum

Centos is the community edition of Redhat Enterprise Linux. Information can be found at :

    http://www.centos.org/
    http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/
    http://wiki.centos.org/

Again the basic information, forums and wiki which is again very useful.

Gentoo is (on paper) a more advanced Linux distribution although recently its becomed another dumbed down product

Product information and support can be found on the following URL's

    http://www.gentoo.org/
    http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml
    http://forums.gentoo.org/

Debian is the base product that Ubuntu is based around. It's more mature but has a reputation for being slightly slow to respond to community demand and a pain to install. Although the installer is much much better now.

Support resources for Debian can be found at

    http://www.debian.org/
    http://forums.debian.net/
    http://www.debian.org/doc/

More generic information and none-distro related information can be found at

    Hardware compatability:

Linux ADSL / Cabel Connections and hardware

    It is Inevitable.....

To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
