    Recommendations fot email spam filter?

Lately the number of spam messages in my inbox is unbelievable. I decided to do something about it, so I started searching for spam programs. Being a poor student (just look at my system) I can only afford freeware ones. I have found so many titles, programs, plug-ins that I am completely confused, as I never had to deal with this problem.

I am using Outlook and Outlook express, and do not like the idea of switching to Thunderbird at my age... However, if there are real advantages from switching and not just a "get back at Micro$oft" mentality, I can be convinced to switch. I would like your opinions about that as well.

What solutions do you recommend? What are you using? Have you also noticed an increase in spam in the previous months or is it just my colleges addresses that have been harvested?

I don't use Thunderbird because I'm anti-MS. I use it because it isn't bloated. I would say if you _were_ using Thunderbird, then they may be extensions out for it. Otherwise, in Outlook you could just set up some filters if the spam is similar? That way it'll get filtered out.

Thunderbird is a good mail client - I'm pretty microsoft orientated , but I just happen to prefer it as a client for my personal mail ( I still happily use outlook for work )

somethign like Mailwasher Pro may well suit your needs better as a 3rd party product.

there's got to be a better gratis option for outlook than trying to write your own bayesian filter with the built-in message filtering bits

I use spampal as its free and not to difficult to setup, then just create an inbox rule for the subject with spam in it and deal with it that way.

    Just means creating white/black lists...

Spampal is quite popular in some download sites. I'll try it.

The spam I receive seems highly evolved. It usually consists of a 10kb (+-2kb) gif with text inside and (outside the gif) many random lines of text sometimes visible, sometimes not. The subject is a question in the spirit of "Do you think you are big enough for your girlfriend?" or "Do you need medication?" and even more ridiculous. The sender only has a first name. This is about 70% of the spam. Another 10% is phishing Barclays notifications etc. And a 10% with part-time job financial manager etc scams in "all your base are belong to us" english. The rest is random. It sounds funny but I am now receiving about 60-70 a day, and a year ago I was receiving 1-2 per week!!!!

Anyway thanks for the recomendations, I am going for Spampal and I will report my results in due course.
