    VMWare Server

Can anyone tell me whether VMWare Server is something you can run only when you need it or does it make changes to the host OS when it instals.

I have a laptop that will be used primarily by another member of the family. It will be running XP MCE 2005 as the host OS. I would like to borrow it occasionally to demo stuff which I want to keep out of harms way as much as possible.

I was hoping that I could install VMS on my test server and run my demo system there normally. If I needed to demo offsite, then I would copy the virtual machine image from the server onto the laptop and start up VM just when I needed it. Is this possible?

Yep. It doesn't do anything to the host other than install the services that need to run when its open but they start automatically when windows boots so nothing to worry about.

I'd have thought VMWare workstation would probably be better suited to your needs rather than the server version

Once you have the image you can just use VMWare Player.

Once you have a VM machine built you only need to player to run in anyway so just copy the machine image to the laptop and use VMPlayer to run it

Workstation costs though doesn't it? I use VMWare Workstation all day everyday, it's a damn good piece of software.

Good tip about the VM Player.

Looks like this could be a good option for me.

    Thanks

It also adds a load of virtual network interfaces and makes windows take longer to finish booting whether you use it or not.

You can stop the services from auto running then make a batch file to start them all when you want to run it, and im sure you could do somthing about the network interfaces...

You can get blank virtual images on the net if you search, which means you don't need something as heavy as the server or workstation version. Just fire up the player and install whatever os you want on the blank image.
