Rumour mill hotting up - Vista RTM announcement expected later today!

Saw a few stories on the web saying that the Vista RTM is likely to be announced today - meaning it's just seven days away for me now (MSDN).
It's been a long time coming but personally i'm quite happy to upgrade (although i'll keep XP around for gaming till the drivers settle down) as i've been using the RC1/RC2 for many weeks anyway (without problems I might add).

My biggest worry with it is drivers - I really don't think a lot of them are up to scratch, and it's this that gives people the impression the underlying OS isn't any good.

Heh, I've got an unlimited MSDN account which I haven't used yet, it may just come in handy

EDIT: Although, I'm not really planning on touching Vista until quite a way in.

Any reason? If it's slower for gaming (it might well be to begin with) then I see the point - for working on the desktop it feels significantly better (to me doing development work).

I like waiting for updates rather than having teething problems - in fact, statistics usually say that many people wait until the first service pack is released for a new product. We test out Vista here at work, but XP does what I want it to do for now. I don't have any reason to switch just yet other than higher quality which isn't always what people want.

Fair enough. I'm having some odd experiences in that respect - Vista is being demanded by our MOD customers (they're on Windows 2000 now) for example - yep, they're jumping right to it(!). Cost isn't a factor for me personally as I'm lucky enough to get MS products for nowt and I must admit I find XP a bit clunky now by comparison.

It'll be interesting to see if those stats ring true - remembering it's been a vast amount of time since the last major OS release (5 years) and that a lot of corporates already have licencing deals providing new OS revisions every so often. I don't deny that XP is good enough - in fact, it's Vista's biggest obstacle - but it's suprising how many people avoided XP because it was seen as a minor revision (NT5.1 versus 5.0).

Thats because the MOD, like pretty much all other gov't organisations is run badly by a complete bunch of muppets that haven't got a clue what tehy are talking about. Most places won't even consider rolling something out untill it has been tested for months, and even then do a very carefull, gradual rollout.

Ah but that's just the point - the MOD are notoriously cautious and that's why it struck us as so strange.. And I think you'll find that most corporate IT are full of muppets - ours are - witness us being saddled with Lotus notes

That's a pretty sweeping statement badass. My dad was a senior MOD procurement official, but I won't take your comment personally.

Having had close contact with the MOD, both through my dad and professionally, I'm astounded that they're talking about Vista. Must be for a specific application, because most departments aren't even considering XP as far as I know.

It is for a _very_ specific (unique) application AFAIK - i've only been told this by the project manager for the particular product.

I don't think any of us can judge the MOD based on a generalisation aimed at specific individuals within the company.

dangel, I get my MSDN account through work, it allows me to get whatever I want for free and I can use it in any way I want to whilst I'm still an employee. The thing is, there's no point gloating about it because I just never use it. What else do I need? I've got legit copies of XP which I bought myself, and that's all I need. The only thing I can see myself using it for is testing out Vista which I'd probably do at work anyway.

Also, you're always going to get at least one muppet in a company. Fortunately for me the majority of people at my company are among the smartest people I've met in the computing field, but seeing as though it's such a big company I guess it'd make sense.

Vista's being officially released in Q1 of 2007 right? I'm probably upgrading my hardware in Q2, so I'll hold off until I have a new system setup.

im about the same im about to buy a top notch new rock laptop and i want to test it thoroughly with a spare hard drive plugged in so my xp drive doesnt get knackered this is the method im using to assess vista rc1

its got a few annoying issues like when looking through network drives it quite often crashes explorer and wireless transfers are horribly slow!
i want to reinstall but id rather use the latest builds if im going to the hassle of wiping and reinstalling as im not a fan of upgrading atall.

thanks directhex i will go have a look but i doubt i will be able to join .....

ouch looks like id have to stump up over a grand to get access to the msdn with downloads

i will just leave it for now and try and find a way to get rc2 or something working or maybe a reinstall will work for me .... although i doubt it

Your RC1 key should work with RC2. Mine did anyway.
