    Best antivirus?

I've tried norton in the past, but now on AVG (mainly because it's free! ), but with both I'm a little concerned about the drags it puts on my PC. Norton is worst for this, but AVG still has things running in the background which I'm convinced slows the system down.

Secondly, does the quality of protection really vary that much? I've been told my numerous sales people that AVG isn't good enough, but I've always assumed that's because they want to sell me some overpriced boxed guff.

I don't mind paying a bit if it's a racidal improvement over AVG.

Its best to look at Cnet for stuff like this. Mostly the performance impact is minimal though Norton is higher than most but then it has more comphrehensive suite of kit.

I have always found McAfee to be good but always try to get the corporate slimmed down edition so that its not bloated with privacy protection stuff they have added of late.

Tends to be personal preference so you will hear a lot of different opinions.

Lastly it can all depend on whether your technical knowldge would get you out of an infection, it usual takes some basic computing support knowledge, if you can do that go for the AVG free option.

Some programs have different heuristics (methods of guessing whether a virus is present based on certain patterns), but these have little effect in general. There are several independent antivirus-testing bodies that measure these programs' abilities to deal with a wide range of viruses. As with all commercial bodies, you shouldn't necessarily trust their results, but Virus Bulletin does publish the programs that fail as well as pass, which inspires confidence.

AVG last failed the VB test in Oct 2005, and the last failure before that was Feb 2004. Norton has morphed into Symantec AV, which has a clean bill of health back to 1999, but given all the problems I've heard about Norton, I wouldn't run it myself. Personally I run the free version of Avast, which last failed in June 2004.

I've used NOD32 on my home system and its widely considered one of the best regarding virus detection, heuristics scanning and virus removal.

If you're paying for AV then NOD32 is my recommendation too.

Does NOD32 hijack your system though? How much is it?

Nope, one of my requirements when choosing an anti-virus was that it should just do what it is supposed to without bothering me - and run with minimal resource usage (unlike norton etc).

    NOD32 can be found here - www.eset.com

Pricing differs based on usage, but if you are a student you get a fairly hefty reduction

£23 quid for a year as far as I can see. None too shabby, even if it's not at dirty-tax-dodging student prices! :-)

NOD32 gets my vote too. It's so little a hog that if you stick it in silent mode, you won't even know you've got it installed.

I use nod32 too. I never pay vat on software (Nod32, Newsleecher). When you get to the payment page and have to fill in the country choose Mongolia or something. It still goes through and you save yourself 17.5%. Plus check out Nod32 affiliates in the States or Ireland or Mongolia if they have one The price can vary a lot depending on where you buy it.
