Windows 7 vs vista Main OS choice?

I know that windows 7 is still technically a test OS as it's still at RC1 stage but question is, would it be worth using as a main OS if you have vista(due to all the problems vista has)?
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Ditto..what problems? I ran Vista since it was released and had little or no problems with it at all. The problems that I did have were with 3rd party software suppliers not updating their software to work with the OS.
Having said that I am running Windows 7 as my main production computer with no problems too.

I used Vista as a mediacenter and gave up after about 4 reformats I just could not get it to run properly. Now I had to admit I think it may have been more a creative labs issue than a Vista issue but it was still a slow cumbersome OS.

Creative were VERY BAD and LAZY at getting their drivers out, even when they were released they didn't always work. One main problem was as said, 3rd party drivers were not developed.

Since SP1 Vista has been a lot better, I haven't tried SP2 yet as I use Windows 7 as my main OS and can't really gripe about it. Apart from the fact IE refuses to load and needs 'coaxing' but as I use FF thats not too much of an issue. However, if you want stability, then use Vista SP2, if you want fun and excitement of using something new, with the possibility of loosing everything, use Windows 7 RC1.

If you have Vista already then I'd hold off on 7 until it's RTM, since you'll just have to format again.

Have been using the Windows 7 RC and prior to that Vista. Have to say I prefer Windows 7 and has been perfectly stable for me. Do whats most conveniant for you. If you got some time, try out the RC.

We use Vista MCE as our main TV and have had practically zero issues with it once set up. It's been very very stable.

Having said that, it only got into this state once I went to onboard sound. We had all sorts of 'issues' would shouldn't have been related to the soundcard, but that vanished once I removed it. It was only an old Audigy 2, but it seemed to cause issues.

It's now running a Core 2, 2 gig of ram, nvidia videocard and a DS3 gigabyte board. It's been bliss. I can't wait to get Windows 7 MCE on their constantly, although I might wait a few months for any patches.

I've had good experiences with both. Vista is a little less fussy about adding 'libraries' though.

Vista Media centre is a huge improvement from standard XP when using a tv card. Most 3rd party TV applications (excluding Myth etc) for windows are pretty rubish. Thats why I couldnt go back to using XP. And also the fany gfx do impress me a little.

I have gone straight from XP to Win7 as my main os (alongside Linux) and its been great. You said you do have Vista so suppose it doesn't matter either way for you, but if you didn't have Vista then well worth holding off until Win7 release imo.

Re: Windows 7 vs vista Main OS choice?

I run Win 7 as my main OS on both my main PC and my HTPC. I have the 64 bit on both, but found I was getting BSODs on my main pc so switched to the 32 bit and it's been working well. I get the odd freeze so open an explorer window 3 times instead of once, but for the most part it works very well for me, and I'm pretty pleased.

People are still posting things like this because Vista had problems! I carried on having problems with Vista after I installed SP1, but I know a lot of people have found it a lot more stable since updating. I also know that one of the biggest problems was not Vista itself but the drivers. None the less, Vista deserved at least some of its bad reputation...

Windows 7 is (IMNSHO) more stable and more usable. A lot of the enhancements they've made to Aero have been really beneficial. If you have Vista now and are having a bad time with it a) make suer you have all the service packs and updates and b) make sure you have all the latest drivers for *everything*. If it still causing you issues after that, try Windows 7 RC (if you can still download it). Then spend the time between now and October 22nd working out how you're going to pay for your Windows 7 license

Re: Windows 7 vs vista Main OS choice?

*shrug* I've had very little problems with Vista, particularly with the stability front. All in all, it was a much better OS release than XP RTM was. Sure, it took awhile for the drivers to play catch up, but it was an overhaul in driver architecture for most devices. Win7 didn't change much of anything, and it still manages to break compatibility with some old stuff, but I do like the new UI, particularly WMP12.
