Question What Have I Done Help!!

The title makes it sound a bit more dramatic then it actually is
    but anyway...

I got my new hard drive yesterday installed it works fine however i had a problem finding it in windows
so i downloaded seagate disk wizard what that started doing is
copying files from my old hard drive onto my new hard drive i didnt want this done so cancelled it

on next start up of my pc it said NTL DR not found
ive tried to repair the instalation with no luck

what i have now done is installed windows on my new HHD which was my plan anyway

however here is the problem i had a password on my old windows installation
so now when i go into my old hard drive and try and go into my documents to retrieve my music/files/videos ETC...

it says ERROR acess denied! now i no this is because there was a password on my old user acount

so what it comes down to is

how do i get my stuff back!!??

i know its a bit long winded but thanks for your help in advance

    Dave!

IIRC, you can take ownership of the folder and then take its contents.

I'll go have a play about and try and remember how to do it

    that's the one.

    it's something like properties/security/advanced/ownership/take ownership

I'm assuming you're using NTFS encryption. I've never had to recover such files, but this might work. Basically, you need to create a Certificates console first, then r-click on 'Personal' under 'Certificates - Current User', select All Tasks->Import... Browse to the location where your old certificates are stored (Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My\Certificates). You will need the password originally used to encrypt the files.

As I said, I've never actually had to do this, so this might not work, but it's worth a try.

Right, I *think* this is correct:

First off, disable 'Simple File Sharing' by doing the following:
Tools -> Folder Options -> 'View' tab -> Advanced settings box, scroll to the bottom and uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing (recommended)"

Then, right click on the folder you want to take ownership of, and go to properties, click on the security tab and then the Advanced button, go to the 'Owner' tab, and click on your username in the white box ('Change Owner To:' and check the 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects' box, and click apply.

You should now be able to access that folder, its subfolders and files!

If you didn't encrypt the files (looking at your post again, I don't know why I assumed that, heh), then just follow the instructions kidzer gave. After changing the ownership of the file you generally need to close the properties box and reopen it, then add your account in the security tab and click 'Full control'.
