    running chkdsk on formatted HD

windows xp was playing up so I thought i'd format and do a clean install, however, part way through installing it I carry on getting BSOD errors which makes me think the HD might be knackered.

Is there any way of detecting/fixing any bad sectors on the HD despite the fact that theres nothing on the HD at all, i think i'll need some sort of bootable cd/usb program.

If you have access to another PC you can just create an XP rescue disk, boot from the disk and all the tools are loaded during boot and just run it from dos.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

I tried ultimatebootcd.com which has a few tools on it. I scanned the HD (WD) and it didn't pick up any errors so I guess it must be something else...the hunt goes on.

I had a similar problem well kinda vice versa, it always BSOD when i tried to re-install windows.. it would get 23% into formatting drives then would BSOD. Happened for ages. I had to format because my dad installed Norton 2006 (over NOD32) no conflict problems but uninstalling any Symantec is something unique and in the end windows wouldnt boot properly so reformat was in order.
I think the BSODS were caused by a dodgy PSU not feeding drives properly.

At what stage in formatting do you get the blue-screen? A full format (as opposed to the quick option) checks for bad sectors and marks them as such, so it shouldn't be attempting to copy to them.

If it's blue screening during the copy from the CD immediately after the format (I don't think it can at this point, but meh, I'll mention it anyway), it's usually a sign of bad memory.
