    Excel help

Any excel Gods out there? Probably easy to do, but I cant figure it.

I have a worksheet containing a large number of chemical names, in the next column is a unique reference number. Is there any way I can search the names and return the number? The problem is that I want it to list all the instances of the name. So if I search for alcohol, it will find industrial alcohol, methly alcohol, etc, and display all the reference numbers next to the names.

It also needs to be easy to use so that I can email to other people. SO some kind of report view.

    Cheers

    Jon

if you were looking up one item that had "alcohol" in it,it would be easy - vlookup. If the entries were all "alcohol" with a corresponding number, itwould be easy with a pivot table

you however want something that is not so easy. You're going to have to go the way of macros i believe, off the top of my head i can't think of any other way. Your own custom function in vb should implement it reletively trivially. Sorry I can't help more

Cheers for looking in, I might just port it across to access and have a play with it there.

Access would certainly be a lot more appropriate

sounds like some kind of filtering.........

could use an auto or adv filter - the latter being easier as would allow one to use on-sheet hotcell for variable

    that's me 2c
