...the only criteria is that it has good Vista RC2 support - it only has to last until Christmas or so, but it has to be better than the pants AC97 jobby on the board I have currently.
So then - anyone got any pointers?

How cheap do you mean by cheap?
You can pick up a Creative Audigy 2 ZS on ebay for about £30 delivered or less - i have one in my system and its very good!
Yeah I'd second the audigy 2. Normally I would recommend the OEM X-Fi, but they aren't getting along well with Vista yet.
What are the Audigy 2 like driver support-wise? The MS drivers for my Live! stop the microphone from working, which makes using teamspeak a tad difficult...

Drivers are OK for XP (got an Audigy 4 Pro myself, which is basically the same card, and uses the same drivers). Don't expect much, if any decent support for Vista though. Basic drivers (with the Audio Console) are about as much as we're going to get by the looks of things.
At the moment anyway. I think creative would have a bit of a backlash if they dont support most / all of the things that the cards do in XP.
I used a Aud 2ZS in RC2 - like Gav said, you get basic audio support, but nothing fancy at the moment. Heck, i couldnt get 5.1 to work properly (although IIRC chuckskull did) using 64bit. 32bit was fine.
So long as the mic works I don't mind... Going to grab an Audigy 2 ZS off the bay this evening.
