Im wanting to block a file type on a server?

I'm toying with the idea of blocking certain filetypes on a server, either blanket block or blocking in certain directory.

    Is this possible?

What kind of server are we talking? And when you say "block" I'm assuming you mean to stop people saving them to the server? Would a script to search and delete those types of files not be enough?

Its a w2k3 box, a script would do the job, but isnt what im after. I dont want people to come in, dump their ipod guts on the server, go away on holiday and come back and find handy batch files wiped it clear then eat my balls with rusty utensils.

I would like to prevent the files even hitting the server, and a popup ideally explaining why files of this type cannot be saved on the server.

Can't you just send round an email asking/telling people not to do it, and then continue with plan B (Delete them). If anybody threatens your future wife's happiness as a result, point them at the relevent policy/document and hide behind someone from human resources.

Earn a bit more of the 'B' in BOFH.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

Just knock up a program which searches user directories and sends a netsend/e-mail informing them of their wrong-doing when it finds a file which shouldn't be allowed.

all of these methods operate under the pretense that the files have made it onto the server however, thats what i think he's trying to stop?

That's a handy feature in R2 0 cheers Moby. I operate a few 2k servers here with a search and destroy script and that works fine - anyone who complains gets pointed to HR and the IT policy which they signed when they started with the company. If they complain any louder I have a look throuhg their proxy logs...
