    Hangs at mup.sys

When I load up windows xp pro it finishes the blue bar loading screen and then goes into a blank screen. I loaded up safe mode and noticed that it was stuck at the driver mup.sys . The last thing I did with this computer before this problem was unplug the power cable from the PSU because it was taking a long time to shut down (stupid). And no I don't have the windows recovery console.

    Any help would be appreciated.

MUP is in charge of filesystem access (Multiple UNC Provider iirc).

So check your HDD is plugged in properly, un-plug your network cable. Without an error dump or anything else its hard to guess what might be causing the problem, it might actually be a red herring that your hanging on mup. Try unplugging any USB devices (mice too!) and see if it boots fine.

Getting the recovery console might be an idea, its sunday, a great day to tidy your house and find where you left that cd.

thanks, I'll try that after I finish memtest-86. I know my hdd cables are all plugged in because they are all detected correctly at the BIOS POST screen.

dosen't mean they are plugged in fully, if there ata the BIOS dosen't query the HDD in as "advanaced" maner as the OS will.

Memtest86 is dead, long live memtest86+.

not for the last 3 years on a lot of high end systems!

why use an out of date diagnostic tool, when the upto-dater one is free?

mup.sys is just the last thing that loaded - prob has nothing to do with your problem. reckon is corrupt registry.

if you can get recovery console, used to be that you could erase old hive files and replace with backups from your auto system restore - windows always keeps at least previous 10 days worth

but with SP2, is no longer so simple

    prob have to rebuild windows.

boot into the recovery console and run chkdsk /f i have this problem on alot of systems and fixes it every time. its because you have some bad sectors on disk
