    Random

Windows 2003 SBS box has started being a bit random.

Older 98 machines now only seem to be able to access files that follow the old 8.3 file name structure, they can see longer file names on the network but wont open a file even though they can copy it from the server to a local drive and then open it fine with the original long file name intact.

I cant connect machines to the Domain.
    I get this error
The domain name BENTLEY might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS. If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration. The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain BENTLEY: The error was: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR) The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.BENTLEY Common causes of this error include the following: - The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS. - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone: BENTLEY . (the root zone)
I have configured the machine via DHCP and static but its still the same.

On the server the only errors logged are.

Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=bentley,DC=local. The file must be present at the location <\\bentley.local\sysvol\bentley.local\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini>. (Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has been denied. ). Group Policy processing aborted. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Which I might or might not be related.

And this one, which would seem to point at DNS/NAT being screwed..

The DNS server could not signal the service "NAT". The error was 1168. There may be interoperability problems between the DNS service and this service.

I've had a quick poke on the net and theres talk of an update screwing things up, I uninstalled it and it made no difference.

    a) Are you sure it's not IP/computer name conflicts on that domain as I've had this error many-a-time before although I can't remember how I sorted it
    b) Are these servers VMWare machines? Because if so they might have SID clashes.

That's the extent of my knowledge unfortunately

Server is on a static IP well outside of the DHCP range, the only static addresses used are also miles from the servers static ip.
