As far as the features it supports, yes......most (if not all ) DX10 cards will run DX9 faster then the fastest DX9 cards though.

You won't get any of the new DX10 features until your running Vista and a DX10 optimised game though,

am not planning to buy vista for a few months if not longer..look at XP....people rushed to buy it but it was plain crap at first...look at it now...still bugs in the system, Vista i think will be far worse than XP, I think this because alot of problems with XP came from Java and other such stuff and with all these 3D components in Vista im sure it wont be long before someone uses one of them to cause havok to peoples machines.

Also There currently are no drivers for the 8800GTX in vista... so pretty much useless card then

Ive had vista final on for a week.. the only problem ive had so far are due to the crappy soundblaster beta drivers.. vista itself is slicker and actually running quicker than xp was

all security experts agree that 3D components are the biggest threat to security on PCs. (!)

All new OSes have a higher risk, this is true, but Vista has been designed with a lot of new security features which are turned on by default. Whilst XP had some new secuirty features (Proccess Tokens for instance) Windows 2k had the same features as the default XP install, as such when a bug with the uPnP stack (a new feature in XP) it got quickly (un fairly?) lambasted!

So Vista will have bugs, but its got some very good new features, right down to the ID card system, which will help make it more secure. Don't use security as a reason not too upgrade. Use the fact that you really want at least 3gig of ram, preferably 4
