I played around with XGL a little, and can honestly see no real benefits - after a while, it just got on my nerves. The only thing that I seem to remember being useful was the ability to view all of the windows at once (or am I just imagining that one?)

Then of course there's the problem (depending on your point of view) of having to use closed sourced drivers (in most cases) in order to use the swish-bang effects. I believe Ubuntu have even taken the decision to install non-free drivers by default, which I must admit surprised me a little. Of course, I suppose that most of Ubuntu's users don't really care (or [erhaps even know) whether their drivers are free or non-free.
