how can you say yawn to that. That thing is amazing, makes vista look like a pile of Microsoft Turd.

There is a story somewhere i heard where microsoft stole an idea i think it was ubunto had and now they have came back and kicked them in the ass, this thing kicks ass and looks great.

    don't talk rubbish.

Do some research on the topic before posting dribble like "ubuntu had the idea and now come back to it"

This is nothing to do with ubuntu and xgl and the eye candy desktop has been around for a while.

    as I said

    "yawn"

since i'm more mild-mannered than ikonia:

    1) apple brought the "opengl desktop" stuff to the masses with "Quartz Extreme" in macos 10.2 in 2002

    2) first glimmers of such things appeared on linux in 2004, with Sun's experimental Project Looking Glass

    3) around mid 2005, the first appearance of Windows Aero for Vista was made

    4) in january 2006, Novell demoed their Xgl project on Novell (SUSE) Linux, and opened up development to the free software community

    5) early 2006, AIGLX project started by the Fedora Linux and freedesktop.org people, as a different approach towards the same end results as Xgl

    6) mid 2006, AIGLX and Xgl integrated optionally into a few Linux distributions such as Fedora Core 6, Mandriva 2007, Ubuntu 6.10

    7) january 2007, Windows Vista released, with Windows Aero for anyone running a proper edition of the OS

    8) mid 2007, AIGLX/Xgl becomes the default in some Linux distributions (Ubuntu 7.04)

if anyone, it's Apple who've been ripped off

    Not at all,

just don't appriciate miss-information being given to people.

Then someone takes the time to correct it (I couldn't be bothered as it would be wasted on you) - you say "I was mixed up" rather than the truth which is

"I saw a video on you tube, thought it looked impressive - knew nothing about it, posted it on a public forum pretending I had any idea what it was all about"
    It is Inevitable.....

OK, ikonia, you've made your point; the OP saw something which looked cool and posted it, being unaware that it had been around for a while. You could have said "XGL's been around for a while". He was mistaken as to its origins, and you could have corrected that misapprehension as Jo did. Apparently, he didn't feel that such a courtesy was beneath him, or that it would be "wasted" on the OP. Personally, I'm rather glad that someone noticed XGL and even if they're mistaken as to the details has raised its profile a bit. More informed posters like Jo are usually pretty good about filling in the blanks and tippexing the errors. We shall now, naturally, expect EVERY ikonia-gram to be 100% error and misapprehension free, since omniscience and infallibility appear to be the standards that you're holding other posters to. Fair enough?

as you well know, my spelling and grammar are terrible.

I certainly don't think explaining things are beneath me. The point is taken I should be more courteous, and I have been in the past. I am and I openly admit frustrated with the lack of quality in threads at the moment.

This thread was a prime example

"check out this you tube video - its great"

for technical discussion thread - I would have appriciated more

"Check out this you tube video - I have no idea what it is or where its from but its running a really great destkop"

Then you can respond with "well - its XGL - its been around a while see these threads, these links and these entries" and inform the poster

.....or if distrubed guy is being honest about his tutor explaining to him about it

"My tutor on my technical course showed me this video of this awesome desktop running. He did explain it was from Ubuntu but I forget the details now. Does anyone know more about it/do people think its good ?"

Again you can respond with a real quality answer.

In the same way I was discussing the fair pack topic with you - you thought about your postings and discussed.

The quality of threads / postings has gone down to the point when people just post a you tube link and its winding me up.

I'm big enough to eat humble pie and apologise, and also take on board the point you made.
