    Hijackthis

    Hey all

i have seen the name Hijackthis thrown around the forums a fair bit and was wondering just how good this program is?

Ive talked to a friend who is under the impression that using hijackthis is a bad idea because people use it to gain access to your machine.

i was wondering which users on these forums have hijackthis and who recommends it?

    thanks

    Re: Hijackthis

hijackthis produces detailed reports about possible problems, nothing more. it's a useful tool, allowing those well versed in the force, to advise you on how to remove a system infection - where an automated tool may fail.

no access is gained, it just produces logs

    Re: Hijackthis

TrendSecure | TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Overview pretty much covers what it, what it does...

HijackThis™ is a free utility which quickly scans your Windows computer to find settings that may have been changed by spyware, malware or other unwanted programs. HijackThis creates a report, or log file, with the results of the scan.

IMPORTANT: HijackThis does not determine what is good or bad. Do not make any changes to your computer settings unless you are an expert computer user.

Advanced users can use HijackThis to remove unwanted settings or files.

Not an expert? Just save the HijackThis report and let a friend with more troubleshooting experience take a look. A large community of users participates in online forums, where experts help interpret HijackThis scan results to clean up infected computers.

It's not infallable, nothing is, and it's updated. But if you're in a jam regarding malware and need to see what's going on in a systems internals, it can offer invaluable insight. But if you don't need it, then there's not much point in having it.

    Re: Hijackthis

Once you have run hijackthis to produce your log file you can upload it (or copy and paste it) to this site and it will tell you what is good and bad. It's a handy little tool amongst many.

Now you can set your friend straight too.

If you ran the auto log reader and it came back with some inconclusive result, it's probably because it is inconclusive, those log readers don't offer a take it to the bank, swear on a bible accuracy. And for a long time they were borderline useless, they have, however, got better and will pick up a solid known infection with a big fat red X, they are a useful first stop to give you an outline of what's going on if you're a bit shaky reading them.

In other words, I wouldn't worry about it. You'll know soon enough when you've got a problem or are infected.

    Re: Hijackthis

Well if it's just "one bad thing" then it's should be manageable / quick and painless to fix or advise. So put your log down...
