Try one of the "dummy" books. They are actually really informative.

Never found a really good linux book unless you just want it for reference suc as bash shell commands and such like. For you issues I would first have a search of the ubuntu forums or post on there as its pretty good.

ive just started on ubuntu and so far im thinking its pretty good. Most things, once you get used to the differences, are much easier.

The flash player for me just installed through firefox when it said it didnt have the plug in.

I followed the ATI driver linked, because i had the jerking screen problem, and it worked authough it needed a restart.

For other things the synaptics package manager, add/ remove programs and automatix (download from the site, google it) are all you need.

Only annoying thing is ima limewire windows user and the linux version is a rpm package grrr

there are a number of limewire-compatible (gnutella network) applications

ubuntu already has one in synaptic (gtk-gnutella package)

If you want to get to grips with the CLI, then "Linux in a nutshell" is excellent - but it isn't specific to ubuntu, but it covers most CLI commands, Vi, Grub and is invaluable. "The Linux Pocket Guide" is also good for quick reference.

Other good generic books are "Linux Cookbook" and "Linux Multimedia Hacks" The last two are slanted more towards Redhat/Debian Fedora, but the principles hold good for any linux system, but files may be in different places and there may be other differences that you will need to figure out.

A quick look at Amazon, using the search term ubuntu throws up some ideas, (the first 4 titles I saw all looked worthy of investigation) and a browse round Waterstones would be worthwhile so you can have a quick browse.

    canon are anti-linux

it seems to work with the (closed source) turboprint driver from turboprint.info - but it's a pain to install, and only low-res modes work for free

not only on my desktop & laptop, but my media machine, and on all the machines at work (including over a million quid's worth of new hardware due in q2 next year)

It looks like Canon are providing Linux drivers with some of their newer hardware.
Grabbed a iP2200 for a friend not too long back. When downloading the driver, saw the linux Printer Filter (http://software.canon-europe.com/sof...301.asp?model=)

Dont know how many others they are supporting it on. Not had chance to try it though (Unless ive totaly got the wrong end of somthing here - which wouldnt be new )

took a look - seems fine if using an old version of 32-bit redhat

alternatively, you get an hp printer, which has open-source drivers built into any modern distro (and developed by hp)

i had a word with canon corporate lately. they were trying to hang up on me by the time i was halfway through my list of why they suck
