Been using media player classic for a long time now. Has to be one of the best players if not the best. No install needed...only one exe file!

If you have difficulties viewing a file it may be that the codec is not installed.

It certainly does not hog the cpu usage, quality is good...I'm not too sure about creating playlists.

Another big thumbs up to Media Player Classic, Alt+7 to bring up the playlist, even though I never actually use playlist features on any media player.. Although you can play audio files on MPC, It's primarily designed for video, so just that + winamp works wonders.

these two may or may not be the same across most players, depending on a number of things

as standard, in windows, codecs are implemented as "directshow filters" - dll files which most media players can and do use. quicktime and realplayer use their own non-directshow formats. the windowsy exception is programs with a linuxy background - i.e. vlc and media player classic. for the former, there is zero external codec support - everything is built in when the program is compiled. for the latter, a number of codecs are built in, but there's directshow support too.

one thing that MIGHT vary your experience, should you decide to stick with something like windows media player, is which codec you use for a given FOURCC - for example, you can use the official divx codec for divx files, but also xvid, ffdshow, 3ivx, or others i've forgotten.

generally speaking, some codecs are unavoidably high-cpu or low quality, and a change of player will make little difference

/me laughs at g8ina. Quite hard.

I feel dirty, but I've just started using iTunes. It's quite good to be honest. It hurts me to say that.

Prior to that, Winamp for albums, WMP for individual tunes and videos. FFDShow, Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative. Yet to fail me.

I just use WMP. I don't see why everyone bitches about it. Winamp sucks, iTunes takes about three weeks to open after clicking the icon (although that's still three weeks faster than the ironically named QuickTime), and every other one I've tried needs a vast number of codecs before it'll do anything. And don't get me started on RealPlayer!

I'm now a foobar convert, it really is a great audio player without the bloat but with lots of nice little features.
