    DVD encoder

im looking for a DVD encoder of all things for WMP9, my new PC (see my system) hasn't got one and me being me i just assumed that there would be one, as all my old PC's have been turn-key and have had DVD software installed on them.
also i want one thats tried and tested, as i dont want my 2 day old PC to have any troubles this early in, and most of all its got to be 100% free.

not asking for much am i?

    Nick

well you won't get one that hooks into WMP9 if thats what you want.

If you want something thats quite polished, easy to use and all the functionality of a comercial product, you probably won't find a free version of that.

There are loads of apps and programs that will convert video into DVD format MPEG-2, others that will build menus etc and others that will burn the lot to a disk. All are free, but i personally don't know of a complete package that is OpenSource or Freeware.

i could upgrade to WMP11 no problem, just add installation files to memory stick, install, et voila! WMP 11 on new PC.

the reason for all that is because i dont have the interweb on it yet :/

but yer...just im completely broke atm

    WMP11 doesn't include a DVD decoder either.

I believe VLC, while not including a decoder per se, can view them internally. Won't let you watch them in WMP, but it's better than nothing. FFDShow might do it, but I've never used that aspect of it.

Sorry to say, but as far as I know, splashing the cash (albeit very little) is the only way you'll be able to get DVDs into WMP.

//edit: never mind... just noticed it's encoding rather than decoding... can WMP even do DVD encoding? :\

pop into a small computer shop and they'll give you an OEM powerdvd for like £2....as they get them free with OEM dvd drives and dvd writers.

if computers they build have dvdrom and dvdrw drives, they have spare capies. i speak from experience!

it's an ENCODER nick was looking for. WMP will easily play a DVD out of the box. and yeas you can get PowerDVD for a few £, but that again is only a player, not a DVD creation app.

No it won't, you will need a 3rd party codec.
