Best application to check and remove viruses?

    Hello guys.

I currently have AVG Free installed on my PC. I just did a virus scan and it detected a few trojans. No idea where these came from as this is a fresh windows XP install.

It deleted them and left one trojan, it just said infected. So then I delete everything in the "Virus vault" do this mean that the virus has been moved from my pc?

I also downloaded SpyBot and this found a few things and removed them.

Can any one give me more insight on this problem please? Is there a tool that I can download for free what will double check that these viruses have gone?

    Cheers.

If your installing windows using a pre-SP2 windows XP installation cd - thats where the problem may lie.

As soon as you connect to the internet using anything previous to SP2, you will get infected with the MSBlast/Teekids and/or Sasser variants after about 10-20 seconds of just being connected (Assuming you dont have any firewall software installed at this point).

This is due to bugs in the Windows XP OS itself which were resolved in SP2.

AVG, Adaware and Spybot are very good antivirus/antispyware software - however look at an alternate browser also such as Firefox/Opera to massively reduce spyware.

Yeah Opera is good (and Firefox) for avoiding being infected with spyware etc, but how about ditching AVG for Avast (also free) or better still pay for Nod32 (about 23 quid).

AVG free is quite capable, but you NOD32 is difficult to beat tbh for the home user. You could give Trend Micro's Housecall a whiz if you want to make sure, & you can get that here.

And what about your firewall? Even if you haev a Trojan, it should stop it contacting the outside world. For freebies try Zonealarm or avast, alternatively pay for Kaspersy of my fave Sygate. Better still, get a hardware solution

NoD32 gets the nod from me as well (sorry couldn't resist). I've used McAfee (yuk), AVG (ok but not great), Avast and F-secure. By far and away the best IMHO is NoD32

Kaspersky is apparently good too, but yeah, I can't fault NOD32. I just don't notice if it's running or not, and that alone is deserving of my monies.
