    I borked my computer :(

    Hi all

To cut a long story short my computer is broken because a fuse tripped cutting the power to my pc during a Defrag so i'm reinstalling everything. My question is, with the XP service packs do they need to be installed sequentially? I'm downloading SP's 1,2 & 3 and i was going to install them one after the other. I'm downloading them now so i don't need to be online to install the SPs.

I think i've got everything else i need - drivers etc but if anyone else has any suggestions / advice it would be appreciated. BTW as much as i'd like to i can't use an nLite disk because my burning facilities are broken along with most everything else on the system so i'm backing everything up to another hard drive so i have everything ready to install when windows is done.

    Thanks for any help

    Andy

Re: I borked my computer :(

That article says you need either SP1 or SP2 for a SP3 install and that SP2 contains all the fixes that SP1 includes so you can just install SP1.

    Hopefully that makes sense

erm if you donwload the system admin one then it contains SP1 Sp2 and SP3 in one install IIRC
    It's a 300MB download IIRC

Re: I borked my computer :(

I was doing a BIOS flash yesterday that I was convinced was gonna get caught by a powercut or something... luckily I didn't... which is surprising the way my build was going!

(1 dead stick of RAM and a BIOS flash later and my PC is working!)

But I had to DL SP2 yesterday, took FOR EVER (apols to anyone in MK area whos internet slowed down, it was probably me! And then decided to get subway when it was installing update 1 of 88...

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you can use nLite to stream in service packs and create a custom installation disk?

Lightbulb Re: I borked my computer :(

Threads like this one help illustrate why you should really run your PC from a UPS... and have some form of anti-surge protection somewhere in the loop as well

Most UPS have surge protection built in these days. The power has to be filtered before it goes to the battery recharging circuitry anyway, so there is little reason not to do it on the PC side too (assuming it uses switching for the UPS triggering mechanism)

A UPS would use no more power than a normal PC other than the watts for the circuit to charge the battery. Once it gets tripped you still get the majority of that power back (other than the small bits lost by other means like heat and battery wear and tear). Battery's don't last long anyway once they kick in, so the power loss even if you charged it to full and drained it without using the PC is fairly minimal.

Why didn't you go directly to SP3?

Correct! and it makes it very easy. Anyone with SP3 and a copy of nLite could figure it out in a few mins
