Firefox 50% cpu when scrolling down a page

I'm getting this problem that happens when I'm on a long page, such as Tesco.com/groceries and also on the hexus forums. If I use the up/down arrow keys to scroll the page, the cpu usage rockets to 50% and the scrolling becomes really jerky.

I have always had this problem with Firefox 2 on the tesco website, but now it has started doing it here, it is a bit annoying.

This is affecting the laptop and the main pc, and it also affected my old laptop (inspiron 1300).

Everything comes up clean on spyware scans with ewido online, spybot and adaware.

    Any ideas anyone?

    Cheers

The only idea I have is that you should be thankful you're not on a PowerBook G4. It uses 70% to scroll! I think it has to do with its use Java for part of the program.

what video drivers do you have installed, is proper hardware acceleration enabled?

Scrolling a page without an off screen canvas been implmented in hardware is very intensive!

also i've found problems with flash, this was fixed by re-installing flash after ff had been setup.

Also come on, its firefox, the only browser to use all the commit available on my tablet PC after a few hybernations!
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)

TheAnimus might be onto something with the drivers. Right after installing XP (still with the Microsoft video drivers) I found Firefox struggled to scroll, ATI drivers make everything work smothely (after some horrible scrolling to find them).

Scrolling in Firefox for me (core duo laptop) raises usage to 24-26%, doesn't seem to struggle to keep up though.

Might be drivers, either that or reinstall Firefox? see if it still happens...

Regarding the hardware acceleration, I havent changed anything (that I can think of) in the last few days, but the problem seems to have spread to forum like pages as well as the tesco website.

hmmm, Ive just remembered that I installed the shockwave plugin the other night...ill have a tinker with that

    Almost mended!

Uninstalled and rreinstalled and that has fixed the jerky scrolling and most of the time, the CPU usage is around 13%, but oddly, the slower I scroll, the higher the cpu usage, its just hit 64%

Its got to be that last update i think.

That is damn odd. Does this happen in any other applications/browsers?

see if the problem is better / worse on sites wtthout/with flash.

Hexus has been known to get some dodgy flash advert animations, and with the ammount of flash adverts doubling plus new chirmstmas campaigns its quite possible that flash is a prime culprate in using cpu.

Tesco's main site doesn't seem to have flash on it, but I don't know about their actual shopping pages.

Have you used windows update to update any drivers in the past.
NEVER use drivers from windows update unless you know exactily what you are doing.
For example, if you ever download video drivers from the Windows update site, expect it to cause these kind of problems in all web browsers

I've done the same and I range in cpu usage depending on which forum I'm in and which ads are displayed, due to the ammount of options that could be displayed there could be a few "evil" pairs

eg: Orange and Scan advert = ok
    Orange and Ipod = bad
    scan and Ipod = ok

    Thanks for all the replies

There is no flash installed at all.

    Shockwave has been uninstalled.

All drivers are from the Dell website, Ive not got to the main pc yet.

    Cheers!

Edit: I can make it hit 48% on this page by scrolling from the top to the bottom, and when it gets to the bottom, scroll straight back up again.

try it on this website and share the results with us.
    http://people.redhat.com/

Also try copying the same page to your harddisk and browsing/scrolling from there

Does it have the same effect
