Soundforge is a good one - not sure how much it will cost you though. Lots of DX plugins available for it too.

Can't think of any free ones at present.

search under my name for a thread in the lifestyle section, I got some GREAT advice there from a few guys in the know.

Followed their advice and got a very easy and cheap setup working.
    It is Inevitable.....

The most common packages are cubase and logic audio these are 2 basically the best, you can produce professional quality songs if you know what your doing.
They are really hard to use tho and I suggest getting some kind of manual/tutorial

programs like soundforge and cool edit pro are more wave editors and so not necessarily as good as recording as cubase

edit* i didnt realise that emagic had been brough by apple and that they had stopped the pc version thats a real shame

What type of music are you producing? whats your current hardware setup?

I like using Cubase myself although soundforge is fantastic for editing and mastering with.

if you decide to go as far as protools, have a looksee at Sony Vegas 7 - is a top video editing app, but has the audio tools that MATCH protools step for step. It started life as an audio editor, video came later.

looks like you be wanting the less expensive side, but worth keeping in mind.

It also depends on your budget !

You can get started with WAVE file recording and editing using just free Goldwave, but after that the sky's the limit.

I use only Vegas 7 for video editing, and I also use Cool Edit Pro and Soundforge for WAVE rec/edit, plus a host of plugins.

My son, who composes music, uses Reason, then post prod editing in Cool Edit Pro.

Feel free to PM me if you need any specific help with any of the above packages. I have nearly 10 years experience with WAVE rec/editing.
    Cheers, David
