    PHP/client side server help

UPDATE: Problem is solved! I used Xampp instead, much easier and it works fine!

I am meant to be writing some PHP scripting for a website I have for a uni assignment

Problem is the guy is a right tool (im not even going to start about how poor his 'teaching' for seminars/practicals is), and did'nt actually teach us anything, he showed us one example (echo) and that was about it, and that we had to use Apache as a web server

Now I have tried to install apache and configure it....but have NO idea what I need to do for it to act as a server for just my computer (All I need is for it to work basically, and not to return all my PHP code like without anything)

Is there a simple/virtual server I could use for this purpose? (prefferably free obviously)

as for the PHP, is there anywhere where I can get a list of the commands and what they do? I have tried google but to no success

any help would be a lifesaver
e-beer for people that can help me lol

I would have said 'University Student? Find out for yourself' but appears you have already done so (or attempted at least).
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

A lame as hell reply, but im going to make it anyway - www.php.net will have 90% of things you will ever need.

I honestly went from knowing no PHP to having a fully working self coded CMS in less than a week (granted, I spent a lot of time on it).

PHP is a pretty friendly language, and of course being open source means tons of source to read through when you're unsure
