    Slack To Gentoo

    Im currently using Slackware on my PC along with windows. Everything works fine with it, however ive tried many times to install gentoo. The installation is a success but it doesnt load my eth0 drivers even after following the instructions to the letter. People who know about gentoo know this is a problem because u need a net connection after the installation. So what i was wondering is can i install gentoo over slackware, and keep all my system settings. Its a bit like installing windowsxp on a windows me machine. That type of thing. Cant his be done with linux distros and if so how? Thanks for ne help

    What network card do you actually have? If it is active during the install, then it should work after...

    Via Rhine (onboard). Ive tried the setup of it so many times now. And ive followed it correctly. I just dont understand it

    if you have difficulty understanding things then perhaps gentoo isn't the distro for you? it's for hardcore nuts who feel the need to compile everything under the sun, which generally implies an unneccessary level of knowledge...

    and as far as i'm aware you really don't want to try & install one distro on top of another - every distro tends to like sticking vital things in different places...

    You cant install gentoo on top of another distro. That would get you into a b0rked state faster than you could say b0rk.

    You might need to compile certain modules for your kernel to get the NIC working. The install kernel has all the network devices compiled as modules I believe.

    How far have you got in the install (what stage) ?

    Also, you might be better posting on the gentoo forums. They are really helpful...

    I ve completed the install many many times. Ive posted on the forums to and they dunno whats wrong. I have done everything right i know i have and ive tried many things. Ill try it again by the weekend. Hopefuly if i use a pci nic which i now have that will work instead. Shall have to see
