Problem with Vista Ultimate 64 after installing Windows Updates

I have Vista Ultimate 64 oem and installed it last night, without activating it, and it had been fine all night after playing Quake Wars, but then I decided to install a few of the Windows updates, which seemed to install fine and then after reboot it wont boot back into Vista. It gets to the loading screen and reboots the computer. Ive tried booting into Safe Mode, booting as Last Known Good Configuration, and then had to resort to booting from the Vista cd and trying a repair, which after an hour resulted in it telling me it could not repair the installation, nor could it find a solution to the problem.

Has anyone had this problem before, or more importantly, can anyone give advice as to what might have caused it? I can only presume it was one of the updates that it didnt like but the only ones I downloaded were the critical updates, no hardware updates etc.

Have reinstalled Vista now and is working ok.
