Experience of running Ubuntu Live CD

On my work laptop it's all a bit locked down, unnecessarily in my view, but does try to boot from CD before going into Win2k.
I am therefore currently running Ubuntu Linux 6.06 Live CD for my general running / web browsing, to complete success! Have even worked out how to install Flash (for youtube) and skype too. Only current prob is working out how to mount and access the hard drive (which is NTFS) but i think i'll get there...

All in all a very useful CD to have.

Next project is to work out how to mount an external drive and then have access to my large collection of mp3's, and find out what would be the best media player.

    mounting an external drive:

plug it in, click the icon on the desktop

    writing to NTFS:

    non-trivial with 6.06, especially from a CD

Ok, fair enough, but hopefully the ability to play mp3s should be easy enough though. Can you please recommend a media player (again, remember this is for a live CD so will need to install each time i boot up)?

    1) enable Multiverse (System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager; Settings/Repositories; tick boxes next to "Non-free (Multiverse)")

    2) install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, which contains plugins for patented things like MP3

    3) use RhythmBox, which is pre-installed under Applications/Sound & Video/Rhythmbox Music Player

Nice one. Have just realised that it can't even play a single mp3 natively, so that answers that one.
I heard about a version of Ubuntu that comes with media functionality out of the box (but aparently not legal in some countries) so might check that out.
    I appreciate the help.

PS Still learning how to install applications - not so easy when you've been brainwashed into the Windows way of doing it.

there are a couple of scripts which automate common tasks like enabling mp3 playback

avoid them, they're badly designed & break system upgrades

    1) enable everything in synaptic (community-supported software, backports, etc)

    2) search for something in synaptic (e.g. '3d deathmatch')

    3) click the white box, click 'mark for installation', and click apply.

I wanted to use Ubuntu to access my C drive from outside Windows XP, which is an NTFS partition (the whole drive). Was surprised I couldn't find a way to do it - does anyone have instructions or point me to a guide?

All I want to do is rename/delete the Windows directory and delete the root files, so I can then reinstall Windows XP on the drive. It's not activated yet. Too much trouble to move all the other files so I could format the drive. This seemed to be an easy route...

    Any ideas? Thanks

Hey - i like this multiverse thing of choosing applications to download!
I am trying a 3d desktop now. This is great! I think i'm becoming a fan...
