Can't seem to find a list of qualifying OS's/products to use for the 'upgrade' version of vista - anyone have an idea, i would imagine its XP, but can an oem be used for it? What about other operating systems? 2k/nt/98 etc?

I don't know for sure, but as far as I can figure it out, you need XP. It can be any version of XP as long as the license is also valid on the machine you are upgrading to Vista - that means if it's OEM XP then the upgrade must also be on the machine that you installed OEM XP to.
This could be annoying, i have oem licenses on all my machines bar the one I am thinking of vistarising, and am currently running xp x64 trial on it - which will expire in about hmmm, a month.

Well isn't buying a new OEM version cheaper than buying an upgrade anyway?
(Note I'm not sure about the requirement for the old OEM license to be valid on the machine to be upgraded - we know it's the case for the anytime upgrades, but no-one's reported the exact license for the upgrade version yet)
This machine gets a new bit of hardware installed/uninstalled around monthly - I use it to test out components that are/maybe faulty for friends/family/work & its the only skt 775/pcie machine I have - don't think an oem will last too long :( otherwise I would of leapt at one - microsofts original license was a big no-no, it was only since they changed it that I even started to think about it!
My option is to use a seperate disk I guess, but all of a sudden it starts getting more annoying when i want it to get less if anything!!

previous Windows upgrade versions had to be applied to a retail install - the licence didn't alow for upgrades to an oem OS licence.
