    Free registry optimisation apps

    Hi guys,

Can anybody tell me of a free piece of software to remove redundant files from the Windows XP registry?

I know there are a number out there but I'm just looking for a prog that really is free...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

    Nimble.

Here's a free piece of advice - NEVER use registry cleaners. Seriously, I've seen so many screwed registries from people who have used one. And if you REALLY must, be sure to back it up first.

if you simply wanted a cleaner, would easily recommend Registry Mechanic, but it costs about 20 quid.

NEVER had a problem with it, nor heard any from the loads of other users I know who use same.

    free? dunno

I would recommend CrapCleaner's registry checker/cleaner mode, I've run it hundreds of times and it's never given me a problem yet.

I run it after I've uninstalled an app to ensure that it's really removed, it finds all sorts of stuff left lying about.

I've blogged about it here as well:

Two mentioned above, both safe in my experience.

It's not something vital for Windows users to do - although you might have redundant information in the registry it's unlikely to be a problem on systems which are reinstalled, say, every two years or less.

If you don't know what you're doing (or what you're removing) i'd just leave it be - or at least make a good backup first (as advised).

I dont advise using Registry Mechanic, thats one of the applications that has screwed with me.

However CCleaner is more than excellent I.M.O it is 100% needed. It wont screw you up, as you can always backup the registry by clicking 'yes' at the prompt.

I think it's a bit hit and miss.. i've used registry cleaner a few times and i've not had a problem so far. Maybe it flags certain keys as 'rogue' that it shouldnt do and thats why its caused you problems. I must admit tho, i only use it once or twice a month

I've used CCleaner for quite a while now, I've never had a problem and recommended it to plenty of other people and I've not heard anything bad about it!

CCleaner is safe, Reg Mechanic isnt.
