HTPC - Vista or XP MCE?

    Hello to you,

My HTPC's HDD failed today (one month out of its warranty ), and I had been just bumbling along using XP home, but given I've got to buy a new drive for it I thought I may as well get an OS designed for the purpose. Hear Vista has a media function similar to MCE, is this just spin?

Which should I get, I primarily use the PC as a freeview PCR.

Didn't they just release AmigaOS 4?
    ...

Actually, the most important thing is driver support. Check what's supported by your capture card. XP MCE is definitely the safest bet.

    Hex,
I've never used Linux, but the reputed lack of support scares me away. Convince me, and I'll give it a go - I've got nothing to lose except my sanity.

Well as said here: http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=98520 The OEM vista Home premium is cheaper than the OEM media centre edition (At ebuyer at least). So I'd be tempted by that, although I expect drivers might be shoddy for a few months yet. And you'd still be shelling out cash for an OS that might cause more problems than XP.

So maybe you're best off following 'Hex's advice and giving Linux ago, it won't cost you anything and if you get fed up with it you can try Vista or MCE later on.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

MythTV is a truly great program, but without a good driver to talk to your hardware it will struggle. Many freeview capture cards are supported, but not all. There's a list here.

    Hurrah! Nebula Digi TV supported

I'll give it a go guys, with the steady hand of Hexus guiding my way I can not fail!

    To do:
    Buy new HDD
    Download Ubuntu
    Get good at stuff.

In all seriousness though, Linux scares me at the best of times. Just when I think I know how to do somthing, Tux appears laughing at me.

I love MCE when it works, but there are a few major issues which I cant belive havnt been patched.

@Agent: if you have a spare machine knocking about you could always try giving Gentoo a bash. It tries to stay as close to upstream as possible, so there's plenty of docs around on how get various hardware working the Linux/upstream way rather than the Ubuntu/Fedora/SuSE/{distro dejour} way. If you go for it, whatever you do, don't use the installer, it's still very immature. Plus hands on is better until you get a feel for how portage works.

It may take a bit of work to get up and running, but there is a nice sense of satisfaction afterwards

The major reason im reluctant to go for a Linux system, isn’t the installation and setting it up (If the info is out there, ill find it and read it ), its when things go wrong.

Quite simply - If Windows has an issue, its rare that I cant fix it. Linux has an issue and that’s days of my time gone sometimes.
Now, I love my Linux machine to bits, but I quite simply don’t have the time to read up and learn a new OS to the level required.
