About LinkBackscan you install visat unlimited on pc which has xp installed already and still keep your files and applications? Or will it erase everything?

Do you mean Vista Ultimate? If so, yes you can but you will need to tell it to install on a blank partition (i.e. not one that you are using now for data or for XP) but other than that you won't have a problem.

Can you upgrade an XP install to Vista.
If he means anything else then the response must be "no - as a clean install will wipe the disk"

I am upgrading my mums Win2000 machine (ie a fresh install) and want to keep all data on her D: partition of the hard drive.
I know this is how XP and everything else works, just wanted to make sure Vista didnt have some wierd dooberry going on.

It works the same way aside from a new bootloader (not that this is problem).

If you install Vista on a machine that already has XP on it will definitely keep the XP settings and folders aswell.
(I did it yestrday at work with Vista Business)
To clarify - if you perform an UPGRADE install on a machine that has XP installed it will keep the XP settings (run the Upgrade checker first though in case your NIC has no Vista drivers, that can be a pain...)
so in theory its best to do a fresh install? i realy thought i had my hdd partitioned into two. That way i can have both vista and xp on it.
Does all drivers from various apps/hardware devices work with vista? Last i heard, most diddnt work including anyone who had 8800gtx cards
