    Anti Virus software

How reliable are the free antivirus programs?

    Which would you recommend?

Would it be better to go for a commercial antivirus program if so what would you suggest?

My windows one care trial is coming to an end £39 to continue with subscription, is it worth it?

I read somewhere that the MS antivirus software didn't make the cut in some antivirus fight to the death that the powers that be hold every so often. MS and McAfee, if I recall correctly, were the only two of the bigger better known AVs that didn't pass the test (the VB100? or something like that). I'd recommend Symantec or ZoneAlarm Suite which comes with AV, Firewall, Anti Spyware/Malware and Privacy tools. From personal use, I think its quite good.

I use AVG free on this machine and the sisters laptop, it seems to do us fine - trialing NOD32 at the mo, not sure whether to stick with it or not - seems to use less resources, but im too tight to spent £23

I've always thought you're better off with a slightly less popular AV because if I were a virus writer, my first thing would be to find a way of circumventing the most popular antivirus clients

I use AVG (paid for it).

Testing AVs is quite tricky because you'll only know you have viruses if your AV picks them up. Saying you're sure you have a clean system because you're using the "best AV" is just asking for trouble

I did pay that, and I'm happy I did - tis a good antivirus program, uses bugger all resources, and is quiet in doing what it does (no annoying popups like McAfee)

well impressed with NOD, small footprint, fairly quick and reasonably priced to.

And Active Virus Shield is a free scanner based on it.

AVAST scores higher than any other free application.

I agree that Kapersky is the best though (closely followed by NOD32).

I also wouldnt use ANYTHING from Zonelabs if you paid me!

Zonealarm security suite gets good reviews from mags, anyway it works well with antivir so it's belt and braces.

Its worth noting that the AOL one is basically a repackaged Kaspersky package and that it includes its own spyware.

Intresting to see Fsecure 3rd but it does seem to hog resources on my sisters laptop.

I run bit defender and i havnt had any problems but mabe its just not finding stuff

It only cost £7 though and apparently i can upgrade to the new version for free which is good.
